- Hmmm. I missed the original posting, so I'm replying to Joanne Dow's
- reply.
-
- If that were a GVP Impact series II drive, I'd say "typical of the GVP
- power supply that comes with that drive." I know about six owners of that
- drive type (myself being one) who have had power supply trouble with it.
- The symptom is exactly what you describe.
-
- However, this may still be true. I had a "Goliath" psu which I used for
- a while. This also started producing variable output, with the drive
- speed wavering. Sometimes the psu fan would stop. Next day it would be
- working fine again. I sent the psu for repair, and after a long delay I
- was sent a replacement though the service engineer said he could find no
- fault. The replacement started doing the same thing about 6 months
- later..... it's a long story I'll cut there.
-
- So I would be highly suspicious of your Bigfoot psu. While Joanne may
- well be correct about the drive, see if you can buy or borrow a voltmeter
- and clip it somewhere to the psu output - the 12 volt motor supply.
- Watch it while your drive fluctuates in speed. Or maybe you can borrow
- another psu to try. But yes, you should certainly backup your files
- forthwith, before doing anything else. If the psu fluctuates while
- writing to the drive, you'll get very nasty file corruptions.
-
- btw the GVP psu troubles can often be cured by opening it (the power
- unit) up and dismantling every connector you can find. Clean all pins &
- contacts with a good quality, no-residue contact cleaner or with
- isopropyl alcohol: then reassemble. Do this also with the external
- connectors, specially the one into the drive.
